journey to here...

1970s
As Junior and Youth studied Karate & Judo

1985
Started Ju Jitsu at the Red Dragon Ju Jitsu Club with instructor Sensei Danny Meeto.

1991
Moved to Monarch Martial Arts under the instruction of Sensei Tony Judd. At this stage of training I was also instructing the junior grades and adult beginners to gaining valuable teaching experience. It was apparent to Sensei Judd that I was an ambitious student and wished to open my own club. With his help and guidance this ambition became a reality in May 95

1995
Monarch Ju Jitsu Club opened in May 1995. Closely linked with the original club this branch quickly became a successful club in its own right, though initially of modest membership. Sadly in 1996 Sensei Tony Judd died after a short illness. His guidance, tuition and friendship are missed by many, not least of which, myself. Sensei Tony always ran a family club with everyone joining together in the true spirit of martial arts - budo. We have tried to continue in the same fashion as a tribute to his friendship and memory.

1996
The running of Monarch Martial Arts was taken over by Sensei John Greenhalgh. During this period I taught classes for him and continued to run my own club, Monarch Ju Jitsu Club

1997
I attained grade of Nidan, second dan black belt

1998
Monarch Ju Jitsu Club began to grow in size. The club diversified, teaching short self-defense courses to women's groups. The club's knowledge base widened with the introduction of Multi-Styles training in combination with other martial arts clubs in the area. All these clubs, whether other Ju Jitsu styles, Karate, Tae Kwondo, Aikido or Kung Fu benefited from this approach, but Monarch Ju Jitsu, as the driving force behind this exchange, gained respect and praise. Close ties with these clubs continue, with Multi-Styles courses taking place several times a year and an ongoing exchange of guest instructors, both into the club and myself to them.

1997
Nidan Ju Jitsu, second dan black belt

1999
N.A.K.M.A.S. Senior Coach
With Monarch Ju Jitsu Club's increasing success we became fully independent, joining with World Kempo Martial Arts Federation under the leadership and guidance of Shihan Martin Rogers, eighth dan. With these stimulating developments the club was attracting black belts from other Ju Jitsu disciplines, once again enriching the club. During this year, via N.A.K.M.A.S. I studied for and achieved the qualifications through level 1, Assistant Coach, level 2, Club Coach and finally, to level 3 Senior Coach. I was honoured to be awarded the Black-Belt of the Year by the W.K.M.A.F.

1999
Black-Belt of the Year W.K.M.A.F.

2000
Instructor of the Year W.K.M.A.F.
During this year the club continued to grow, but importantly, the success in attracting students allowed us to upgrade training equipment and matting. Multi-Styles and ladies self-defense courses continued, with invitations from Shihan Rogers to instruct at national events. At this time, as Chief Instructor, I was asked if we could teach basic self-defense to a local group of disabled youngsters. This was a new and exiting venture for me, providing myself and fellow instructors with the interesting challenge of adapting existing Ju Jitsu techniques to their special requirements. The proof of success is that this has not been a one-off event but happily a recurring opportunity to bring our sport to a section of our community normally denied such activities. I was honoured again by my colleagues at W.K.M.A.F. when they awarded me Instructor of the Year. As the year closed I organized a charitable martial arts course in aid of the local cancer hospital, the Christie. The help of W.K.M.A.F., local clubs and their instructors were invaluable. Renshi Steve Baker, Senior Instructor & E.U.S.A.I.M.A.A. member was especially notable in this. The course was a great success, raising hundreds of Pounds for the hospital, and I continue to organize this event on an annual basis, the next being December 2001. Happily, the positive publicity this gives to Monarch raises its image in the local community.

2001
Nominee W.K.M.A.F. National Instructor of the Year in the Black belt Hall of Fame.
Inducted into the E.U.S.A.I.M.A.A. for National Instructor of the Year in the Black Belt Hall of Fame
Monarch Ju Jitsu Club continues to expand and this year upgraded its accommodation to two new venues, which we were able to furnish with training equipment. With sponsorship by local business we have now purchased a trailer enabling us to transport our training mats around the country - to contribute to large training events, too large to be equipped by just one club - and to show off Ju Jitsu in venues previously closed to us. I returned the favour and instructed for Shihan Rogers on an Association training weekend, raising £400 for the local cancer hospital. Other Multi-Styles training courses continued. I entered the Taebek Martial Arts Competition, gaining · First Prize in Self-Defense · Second Prize for Team Kumite I was nominated by W.K.M.A.F. for National Instructor of the Year in the Black belt Hall of Fame. Shihan Rogers has sponsored me for induction into the E.U.S.A.I.M.A.A. for National Instructor of the Year 2002   Gained 3rd Degree black belt under the examination of Soke Martin Rogers.
